Amber Wilson, landscape and garden designer, visual artist.

Diploma in Landscape Design, awarded Top Design Student in 2023

Before establishing her landscape design practice, Amber spent over a decade as a university lecturer in Visual Arts at AUT, honing an ability to understand and clearly communicate aesthetic concepts. This academic background also informs her research process across every project.
As the stepdaughter of an architect, from an early age Amber was immersed in conversations about the unique needs of each site and the intrinsic connections between people, place, and the built environment.
Her work as a represented artist with Anna Miles gallery and understanding of composition and form, underpins her approach to design.
Drawing on principles of rhythm, texture, and a painter’s eye for colour harmony, Amber creates gardens that feel refined and deeply connected to their surroundings. Living compositions that evolve with the seasons, celebrate the ecology of their site, and invite a sense of ease and belonging.

DESIGN APPROACH

My background in fine arts enables me to bring a detail-focused eye and the ability to balance aesthetic nuance with practicality. I create gardens and hardscapes that are thoughtful, joyful, layered, and designed for how you really live outdoors.

Working alongside established landscape designers I’ve contributed to planting design across Auckland and throughout Aotearoa NZ, and cared for private gardens ranging from inner-city courtyards to large, established properties.

I approach garden design by listening and observing. Collaboration with clients is central; every design is a conversation shaped by your needs and the character of your site.

A “right plant, right place” philosophy underpins my planting design, as does an emphasis on using native plants, conserving resources while ensuring gardens thrive long term.
